Christine’s Story

When *Christine was five years old, her entire family was killed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

"I went to the market to sell the banana and the mango. I left all my family inside the house. When I was at the market a group of boys in the Hutus - they killed my family by slaughtering their necks with the machete. I came back into the house. I found blood everywhere. I was so scared. All I could do was start running. Whoever killed my family, whenever I see that person, I will kill him and his family...that person will not go unpunished. I have to revenge before I die in this world."

Christine was taken in by a women and later lived in an orphanage. At the age of 18 she was turned out of the orphanage. She made her way to a refugee camp.

"I found a guy who I fell in love with him. He decided to propose to me. And he said, 'I want to go and meet your parents so I can pay the bride price.' I started crying and started telling him my story. When I told him that, the guy just stood up and ran and I never see him for two weeks.

After two weeks he came, and he was just crying and he didn't know where to start. He told me that he was among the guys that killed my family. When he told me that, I was like - I have been praying for this for so long. I'm just going to buy a gun and I'm going to kill that person and his family. But I have a friend, she shared with me the OneTribe program. It talks about forgiveness. It talks about how God is the source of all peace. And I decided to forgive him. I decided to forgive the person who killed my parents and my family.”

"He is a changed person now and he is even a pastor. He has been the best husband. He has made my life happy again. Finally I can put a smile on my face. Everybody who is listening to my voice, try to forgive anybody who have ever done any wrong to you. Find peace. Thank you, thank you, OneTribe. Thank you so much. God bless you!"
